Hyper dog
Q: I have a jug (jack russel and pug mix). he is about 1 year old now. the problem we are having is we can not get him to calm down. while we are out he will chew holes in the furniture, he chews on our hardwood steps going upstars and everything else he can get ahold of. also when we come home he starts to go crazy jumping up and down, running around and will not stop untill he falls asleep arount 10:00 at night. we understand that he is still young and we have tried professional training to help, with no results. he is extremly friendly and loves people, almost to much. is there anything you can recomend that we can give him to calm him down. we hope you can help, thank you michelle
A: Separation anxiety is best treated by combination behavioral therapy from vet trained in behavior problems(not trainer) as well as medications. drugs like amitryptylline or clomicalm might help. also consider natural meds from health food store known as flower essences such as rescue remedy which can be safely used long term

Ear infection
Q: My dog has had an ear infection in her left ear now for quite some time. she has been to the vet twice for the same ear. the vet has done swabs and has diagnosed 500mg of cephlaxin (one cycle) and 10 mg of prednisone. her ear did get better for a little while, but the infection returned. i was wondering if two cycles might do the trick this time. please let me know. thanks, coy heath
A: Two cycles might help but often vets do not addressunderyling causes which are main reasons problems keep coming back. you should ask about allergy workup including low allergy diet witih diet like purina ha or californai natural lamb and rice diet by natura brand. also if keeps returning consider thyroid testing as well as blood allergy testing for inhalent allergies to molds, grasses, dander, pollens, etc
Shop for: prednisone

Dog odor
Q: I have a border collie mix who smells less than a week after a bath. we have had him 2 1/2 years and this has never been a problem before. thank you, carol legate
A: Try a different diet like an all natural one like pet guard or california natural lamb and rice. also add prozyme to meals as well as flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily to see if helps over a few months
Shop for: prozyme

Cutting nails on active dogs
Q: We have two min pins and they don't like for us to cut their nails. what do you suggest to accomplish cutting their nails? thanks
A: You could get low dose sedative from vet known as acepromazine to use when you need to cut nails
