Dachshund
Q: I have a male, dapple dachshund, and he has alot of problems with his anal glands. i recently to him to the vet, and had them express his glands, which were very full at the time. it has been a couple of weeks, and he is still scooting, and has recently starting scratching alot. i checked for fleas, and ticks, but found nothing. my question is, could this be something else??? usually, as soon as he start scooting, it is his anal glands, this time, even though, they were full, he is still doing the same thing. please help....thank you, gena bonds
A: Could be allergies. make sure no fleas with good flea comb of coat especially lower back and inspection of groin. also could be inhalent allergies or less likely food allergies which can cause this. some dogs also can have parasites like tapeworms which cause anal scooting so have stool checked out. in meantime try oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound twice daily and try adding some extra fiber to his diet to help anal sac emptying such as a teaspoon or two of metamucil or canned pumpkin

Peekapoo behavior
Q: Our six year old peekapoo (gracie) is very moody. one minute she can be very loving and the next, she'll act like she wants to take your arm off. we also have a ten year old peekapoo that is very even tempered, but it's getting to the point that she's attacking him every chance she gets! he walks across the floor near her and she shows her teeth & growls, then usually tears into him! she's not just like that with the other dog either. she will be on the sofa or on a chair and when someone walks near her, she'll snarl at them. and other times she's a loving baby. this behavior changes in a moments notice. what could be wrong?
A: She could feel threatened or is asserting her dominance as it sounds like dominance aggression. you may want ot work with a veterinary behaviorist to work on behavior modification with you; also could try natural flower essences from health food store. ones to try would be holly, scleranthus and rescue remedy which can put a few drops on her mouth 3 times daily safe and nontoxic to use long term
Noisy stomach and pain
Q: This morning my dog's growing stomach woke me up. she has not eaten today, but wants to eat grass. i gave her 1/2 pepsid as recommended by the vet. she has had many blood tests but shows no problem. she is 14 years old and this is a common problem but it is getting worse. she weighs about 22 pounds. i have her on hill's i/d plus an enzyme powder. this is a periodic problem, but it seems to be occurring more frequently. taking her to the vet has not resulted in an answer. she seems to be in constant discomfort when she gets bouts of this problem. help!
A: If blood work and x rays reveal nothing, then you may want to consider an abdominal ultrasound to more specificaly look at her internal organs. if that was non-remarkable, then you could see a specialist and have an endoscopic exam of her digestive tract. she may have a chronic inflammatory disease of her digestive tract, which will not show up in blood work or x rays. many of these dfan be successfully treated. but we alsowant to make sure she does not have cancer which the ultrasound can.
