Testing for heartworms
Q: My question relates to the amount of time it takes to get a positive or negative result from a heartworm test.i recently had my dog (jack russel terrier mix) tested for heartworms. within 10 minutes after drawing a blood sample, the vet came back with a positive diagnosis for heartworms. how long does it take to get results?
A: Usually run in office and can be told in a few minutes. however i always like to confirm in office positive test with test at outside lab as i have seen many false positives over years.
Food
Q: I just got a 10 month old great dane and i would like to know how many times a day and how much suold she eat and what is the best dog food for her?
A: For this german breed, one of better foods i have found is solid gold, which was developed by dane breeder. available at only finer pet stores and health food stores. also could consider other natural diets like pet guard, canidae or california natural by natura. amount to feed would depend upon brand as all have different nutrient density, but in general i recommend 1/2 to 3/4 cup per 20 pounds of body weight per day of these better foods which are more nutrient dense
My dog pulls out his fur
Q: I think my dog may have an obsessive compulsive disorder. he licks his feet all the time and recently he's started pulling the fur out of his feet as well as pulling out the hair on his testicles. we had a "bucket" which we put on his head for a week and he didn't seem bothered by pain or anything in those areas but as soon as the bucket was off he started to pull out his fur again. i'm at my wits end i'm worried he's going to get an infection.
A: Need to have vet rule out allergies first such as inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies as well. might want to ask vet about med known as amitryptylline which is not only good antihistamine but also good if behavioral. also consider adding to food brite coat xs from 1800petmeds in addition to prozyme as well which might help allergies long term
Shop for: antihistamine, prozyme, 1800petmeds
Ear mites
Q: I have a registered two yr.old boston rat terrior . she has ear mites really bad in both ears. she will not let me put medicine in her ears for this. is there something i can get to put on back of neck that will cure this? i hear you can get revolutions for ear mites & heart worm to be applied on back of neck, but she gets the heart worm shot every six months & i dont want to do that. i am just looking for something for ear mites only to be applied to back of neck. thank you i hope you can help me
A: Only product i know that you ask about is revolution. however i would take to vet as ear mites are not that common in dogs this age. could be yeast infection or bacterial infection in ears
Shop for: ear mites, revolution
Arthritis
Q: My dog , female-10 yrs old lab mix was getting shots in the hip once a month have moved, but can't remember what drug it was. can you help me? terry
A: Too many possiblities to say exactly which one. was if for arthritis, a hormonal problem like addison's disease, an allergy shot?
My dog smells
Q: My dog smells absolutly horrible! no matter how many times we bathe her with dog shampoo she still stinks what can we do that is guick and easy?
A: This may be a sign of a fungal infection of the skin. you should have your pet examined by a veterinarian, possible one with a specialty in dermatology.
