Food
Q: I just got a 10 month old great dane and i would like to know how many times a day and how much suold she eat and what is the best dog food for her?
A: For this german breed, one of better foods i have found is solid gold, which was developed by dane breeder. available at only finer pet stores and health food stores. also could consider other natural diets like pet guard, canidae or california natural by natura. amount to feed would depend upon brand as all have different nutrient density, but in general i recommend 1/2 to 3/4 cup per 20 pounds of body weight per day of these better foods which are more nutrient dense

Flea and ticks
Q: Hi, i noticed this past summer that frontline was not working as well in years past. is there a reason? are they becoming immune or maybe i am not keeping my labs out of the water long enough afterwards? thanks
A: The frontline was probably working, but the flea infestation was so severe that you were finding new fleas on her constantly. remember, treating the pet is not the answer. you also have to treat the house and yard.
Shop for: frontline

Rabies
Q: I have a 11 year old dog and i was wondering if a rabies vaccination is necassary every 3 years, he had his last one 3 years ago. thank you for your time.
A: That would depend upon your local and state ordinances which you must follow. in actuality most rabies vaccinations are good immunologically for much longer than 3 years in most cases.

Yellow lab chewing hair off on hind legs
Q: I was wondering why our dog would be chewing at her back legs, and chewing the hair off right down to her skin. we put frontline on her a couple of weeks ago, and now she started chewing her back legs. not sure if there is any link to the two or not. thank you
A: Some dogs can rarely have reaction to frontline in hair follicles causing itching, etc but usually occurs right after application and usually resolves. you probably have other types of allergies such as seasonal inhalent allergies or possibly food allergies. try corticare shampoo from 1800petmeds every few days in addition to oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1mg per pound orally twice daily. if no help, see your vet
Shop for: frontline, 1800petmeds

Flea & tick pill?
Q: I have heard there is a pill that can be given to dogs and cats to kill fleas and protect from reinfestation. is this so? if so what is it called and where can i get them. my hymalaian/persian cat has very odd looking red fleas that are very difficult to get rid of. thank you so much!
A: There is no tablet for cats. program makes a liquid that is given to cats that prevents fleas by preventing their eggs from hatching.|if you use a topical product you can supplement them with capstar tablets to kill all adult fleas within hours.|you can get information on these on our website.
Shop for: capstar

Best tick prevention
Q: We are traveling to nevada and are trying to determine if frontline plus is the best tick prevention for our two dogs. given that there are different kinds of ticks, we want a product that will be most effective in nevada. we live full time in teton valley, id.
A: You might want to add a preventic collar during the time of your visit.
Shop for: tick, preventic collar, frontline plus

Ear mites
Q: We have a 6-cat inside, 1 inside/outside cat population. and many cats outside permantly. the initial 7 are my concern. i've been told they have ear mites and revolution was recommended. no flea or tick problem, just ear mites. what do you recommend and why?
A: I am not big fan of revolution as i have heard about some side effects. i dont like products that supposedly work on everything. in fact, i have heard of many dogs becoming heartworm positive on revolution, which it is supposed to prevent. i prefer selective action of my medications; if ear mites the problem, then treat ear mites directly through one of many ways including topical tresaderm; topical one time application of acarexx or milbemite or perhaps use of ivermectin.
Shop for: ear mites, revolution, tick

Distemper and kennel cough
Q: Can i give my dog both of these shots at the same time and should i give him the parvo shot also?
A: Vaccine recommendations should be made after examining the pet. i suggest consulting your veterinarian for a recommendation.
