My dog breath stinks
Q: My dogs, pal, mollie & sadie breaths stinks what can i do. i already try the breath tablets ain't working help please.
A: Any pet with bad breath should be examined by a veterinarian, unless you know it is caused by something the pet ate. some causes of bad breath can cause severe and even fatal complications, if not treated promptly.
Peekapoo behavior
Q: Our six year old peekapoo (gracie) is very moody. one minute she can be very loving and the next, she'll act like she wants to take your arm off. we also have a ten year old peekapoo that is very even tempered, but it's getting to the point that she's attacking him every chance she gets! he walks across the floor near her and she shows her teeth & growls, then usually tears into him! she's not just like that with the other dog either. she will be on the sofa or on a chair and when someone walks near her, she'll snarl at them. and other times she's a loving baby. this behavior changes in a moments notice. what could be wrong?
A: She could feel threatened or is asserting her dominance as it sounds like dominance aggression. you may want ot work with a veterinary behaviorist to work on behavior modification with you; also could try natural flower essences from health food store. ones to try would be holly, scleranthus and rescue remedy which can put a few drops on her mouth 3 times daily safe and nontoxic to use long term
Best tick prevention
Q: We are traveling to nevada and are trying to determine if frontline plus is the best tick prevention for our two dogs. given that there are different kinds of ticks, we want a product that will be most effective in nevada. we live full time in teton valley, id.
A: You might want to add a preventic collar during the time of your visit.
Shop for: tick, preventic collar, frontline plus
Leakage/odor
Q: I have a 3-year old female greyhound mix. recently, she has had slight urinary leakage, accompanied with odor. she's been cleaning herself more frequently and with each incident. she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable. i was wondering if it could have anything to do with being spayed (which was done 2 years prior) or what the problem could be. before taking her to the vet, i was curious to know what i could do or give her that may take care of the problem.
A: I would have urine checked for infection first at vet. if no infection, urine incontinence is common in dogs and can be due to low estrogen levels after spaying. meds like phenylproponolamine or low dose estrogen is best way to treat
Mange
Q: Hi my brother found a dog on the side of the road and it is maybe a month or so old and it scratches alot and has spots of missing hair and i was wondering if that is the mange and also if it is contagious to where humans can get it and if so how to treat the animal?i was told if a dog has the mange you can dip and for a couple of days in motor oil and it will get rid of it?can you plz email me back and let me know.thank you so much.
A: I would not use motor oil. to diagnose mange which is possible you will have to take pup to vet for exam and skin scrape. very treatable but need appropriate diagnosis
Rabies
Q: I have a 11 year old dog and i was wondering if a rabies vaccination is necassary every 3 years, he had his last one 3 years ago. thank you for your time.
A: That would depend upon your local and state ordinances which you must follow. in actuality most rabies vaccinations are good immunologically for much longer than 3 years in most cases.
