Arthritis
Q: My dog , female-10 yrs old lab mix was getting shots in the hip once a month have moved, but can't remember what drug it was. can you help me? terry
A: Too many possiblities to say exactly which one. was if for arthritis, a hormonal problem like addison's disease, an allergy shot?

Carrots
Q: I was wondering are carrots good for dogs. i am trying to cut back on giving my dogs treats to help them loose weight. i thought i heard that carrots are good for dogs and are not harmful to them. is this true?
A: Carrots are excellent choices as low fat treats for dogs and are excellent source of vitamin a for immune system as well as excellent for teeth!!!

Possible arthritis
Q: My cat is 13 years old, and overweight. he probably weighs 20 lbs. he's been having trouble getting up on the furniture. i thought it was kind of funny, but recently he must have fell from a countertop or some place. it's like he has no control over his back legs. although he has gotten better. i've been really babying him, making sure he doesn't jump off the couch or go up and down the stairs that much. but still when he runs at full speed his back end will go almost sideways, like he lost control of his back legs. i was looking at that cosequin or joint flexor. what would you recommend?
A: Try cosequin from 1800petmeds as well as give him extra antioxidant vitamins like vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 250 mg twice daily as well as vitamin e at dose of 100iu daily and cod liver oil 1/4 teaspoon added to food daily as well as prozyme from 1800pemeds to each meal
Shop for: vitamin, prozyme, 1800petmeds

What shampoo should i use.
Q: My dog has all the symptoms of seborrhea, a common skin disorder in dogs. she has flaky dandruff, oily feel to the coat, and a strong odor. i was told i need a medicated shampoo. what do you recomend?
A: I would start with oxydex shampoo every 3 days(from 1800petmeds). make sure let sit on hair coat for 10 minutes before rinsing. also consider oral supplements like prozyme for coat as well as added flax seed oil to her diet at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds

Lab can't rise from laying position
Q: My just turned 15 year, 74 pound female lab suddenly was not able to rise from a laying position and had trouble maintaining position when urinating. she had been on 50 mg deramax for general stiffness. the vet recopmmended steroid medication at 20mg 2x day for 5 days. i am concerned that weight gain and frequent urination side effects will exacerbate her condition. doing research, i see deramax recommended dose is 1.8 mg/pound, so she was severly underdosed. i also see deramax is indicated for orthopedic surgery pain, which she did not have. i also see there are several nsaids that are indictaded for joint problems, arthritis etc. i have decided to increase the deramax befgore going to the steroid, but do you recommend another nsaid?
A: I actually prefer this one. |dont increase drug dosages on your own without checking with vet who knows your dog. i also would add supplements like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds to food as well as prozyme and brite coat xs as source of omega 3 fatty acids. also consider proanthocyanidins from health food store at dose of 50 mg twice daily as well as vitamin e at dose of 400iu daily and vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily. no steroids. see different vet

Vomiting
Q: Is it okay to give a dog (golden retriever 65lbs) pepto, or is pepcid better. how many tabs to i give her. thank you julie
A: |i would avoid pepto due to fact it contains salacylic acid which is aspirin that can be hard on stomach. try pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once to twice daily. if persists, see vet
Shop for: aspirin

Eye scratching and hair loss around eyes
Q: My dog has been rubbing his eyes w/paws. eyes are watery. he is lossing hair around eyes and eye lids. the vet said to give tavist-d. he's still losing hair around eyes. what will help hair grow back and stop his eyes from itching?
A: Could try other anthistamines like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily or chlortrimeton at 4 mg twice daily. if no help see your vet again. also consider product eye clear from 1800petmeds
Shop for: 1800petmeds
