Poisons
Q: I was wondering if you could list some poisons, that could potentially hurt or be fatal to my dog? thanks
A: Anti freeze, mushrooms, cyanide are a few that come to mind
Eye scratching and hair loss around eyes
Q: My dog has been rubbing his eyes w/paws. eyes are watery. he is lossing hair around eyes and eye lids. the vet said to give tavist-d. he's still losing hair around eyes. what will help hair grow back and stop his eyes from itching?
A: Could try other anthistamines like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily or chlortrimeton at 4 mg twice daily. if no help see your vet again. also consider product eye clear from 1800petmeds

Testing for heartworms
Q: My question relates to the amount of time it takes to get a positive or negative result from a heartworm test.i recently had my dog (jack russel terrier mix) tested for heartworms. within 10 minutes after drawing a blood sample, the vet came back with a positive diagnosis for heartworms. how long does it take to get results?
A: Usually run in office and can be told in a few minutes. however i always like to confirm in office positive test with test at outside lab as i have seen many false positives over years.
Leakage/odor
Q: I have a 3-year old female greyhound mix. recently, she has had slight urinary leakage, accompanied with odor. she's been cleaning herself more frequently and with each incident. she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable. i was wondering if it could have anything to do with being spayed (which was done 2 years prior) or what the problem could be. before taking her to the vet, i was curious to know what i could do or give her that may take care of the problem.
A: I would have urine checked for infection first at vet. if no infection, urine incontinence is common in dogs and can be due to low estrogen levels after spaying. meds like phenylproponolamine or low dose estrogen is best way to treat
Adrenal gland removal
Q: My 11-year-old lab recently had a mast cell tumor removed. i ordered an ultrasound to determine whether or not the cancer has spread to her liver or spleen (it has not), but the oncologist uncovered a small mass in her right adrenal gland. a low dose dexamethasone test came back inconclusive for cushing's disease. i have 2 options: monitor the adrenal gland or remove it. the oncologist and my vet both recommend removal and have assured me that the left adrenal gland will cover for the removal of the right. my concern(s) is that (1)this is a complicated surgery, and she is not a young dog anymore and (2)she acts like a teenage dog ... very active and happy ... what affect will the removal have on her behavior. i just want to do what is best for my dog. suggestions? thank you.
A: I would not have the surgery unless she had severe signs of cushings disease like excessive thirst uriination or appetite, etc. if she is clinically ok i would leave alone for now and monitor situation
Cutting nails on active dogs
Q: We have two min pins and they don't like for us to cut their nails. what do you suggest to accomplish cutting their nails? thanks
A: You could get low dose sedative from vet known as acepromazine to use when you need to cut nails
